Description
In this four-month program, we will deepen our practice by studying and reflecting on the teaching that liberated the Buddha: dependent arising (Paṭicca Samuppāda). This profound aspect of the Dharma can seem mysterious, and in many ways it is. As the Buddha’s attendant Ānanda once remarked that he fully understood dependent arising, the Buddha gently corrected him, saying that it is indeed deep and appears deep. Yet, even if we don’t fully comprehend it at first, exploring this truth can reveal much about causality and conditionality.
Dependent arising invites us to look closely: How does dukkha (unsatisfactoriness) arise, and how does it cease, leading to genuine freedom and happiness? What conditions fuel reactivity in the mind, and what gives rise to calm and clarity? Through observing our direct experience, we begin to discern the web of causes and conditions that shape it. As our understanding matures, unwholesome patterns naturally weaken, and wholesome qualities can take root and flourish.
Throughout this program, we’ll explore practical ways to apply dependent arising in our daily lives, while also touching the deeper, potentially liberating dimensions of this core Dharma insight.
Homework and Time Commitment
Each month will offer a balance of study and practice. You’ll receive readings and/or recorded talks to explore, along with simple exercises and reflections to help bring the teachings to life. Before our first meeting, there will be something to read or listen to, to help you settle in and begin reflecting on the themes we’ll be exploring together.
The other months plan to spend around 2–3 hours each month with the study materials, and to practice with the exercises for about 30 minutes, four times a week. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet with your small buddy group (see below) at least once a month; a space to share insights and support one another in deepening your understanding.
Small Buddy Groups
During our first meeting, we’ll form small kalyāṇamitta (spiritual friendship) groups – our “buddy groups.” These small groups will meet once a month to share about the homework, reflections, and how the practice is unfolding. The intention of these kalyāṇamitta groups is to nurture genuine connection and mutual support; companions on the path who help one another stay inspired, grounded, and open-hearted as we explore the teachings together.
Who this program is for
-
Some meditation experience: To join, you’ll need a bit of prior meditation background. This could be attending our sangha (or another Insight Meditation community) for at least three months, completing an introductory course in Insight Meditation, or having participated in a residential retreat. If you’re not sure whether your experience fits, please contact us.
-
For those wishing to deepen their practice: This program is for anyone who feels called to explore the Buddha’s teachings more deeply; not just as ideas, but as a lived, ongoing practice in daily life.
-
Commitment and community: This program is meant to be an immersive, supportive container; a space
where we can grow in understanding, kindness, and connection with one
another. We ask that participants attend all four classes, engage with the monthly homework and exercises, and meet with their buddy group at least once a month.
Generosity for the Teacher and the IMCR Group
This program is offered on a dana basis (donation basis). There are two ways to practice generosity for this program:
- Generosity for the teacher: the suggested donation for the teacher is (for al four classes): $75 – $300 (sliding scale).
- Generosity for the IMCR group: we appreciate donations of any amount you feel comfortable and generous giving.
Your donation to the teacher provides support to allow Marjolein to continue offering these teachings, and your donation to the IMCR group allows the continuation of the IMCR group. Please give as feels appropriate and generous for you. Please delight in your generosity and know that the dharma continues to be offered to you and others through our collective acts of sharing. All are welcome, no donation is required.
At the meetings there will be the opportunity to offer a cash donation, or a donation by check. You can also donate online to Marjolein and/or the IMCR group.
